Do you have Parkinson's disease and have trouble with learning, remembering or problem-solving?

What is the purpose of this study?

This study is being conducted to see if safinamide, a research medication, can improve learning, remembering, judging or problem-solving in Parkinson's disease patients experiencing problems in those areas.

Can I participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

• Conditions:Parkinson's Disease With Cognitive Impairments
• Age: Between 45 - 80 Years
• Gender: Male or Female
• Inclusion Criteria:

  If you answer YES to the following questions, you may be eligible to participate in this study:
  
      1. Are you 45-80 years old?
      2. Do you have Parkinsons disease?
      3. Can you speak, read, and write English?
      4. Are you taking anti-parkinsons medication(s)?
  
          *A research team member will discuss all the criteria with you.
• Exclusion Criteria:

  If you answer YES to any of the following questions you may not be eligible to participate in this study:
  
      1. Have you been diagnosed with a mood disorder?
      2. Do you have severe dizziness or fainting when you stand up?
      3. Do you have HIV or Hepatitis B or C?
      4. Do you have times when your medication wears off?
      5. Have you taken any investigational medications in the past 30 days?
      6. Have you taken safinamide?
      7. Are you pregnant, lactating, or a woman attempting to conceive?

Detail Study Description

Parkinson’s disease is caused by the progressive impairment of a group of cells in your brain that produce dopamine, an important chemical in your brain that helps regulate movement. Safinamide can help increase the amount of dopamine in the brain, which may improve your Parkinson’s disease symptoms, including cognitive problems that you have been experiencing.

During the study, you will be given Safinimide or a placebo (a lookalike pill without any drugs or medicine). No one involved in your care will know if you are taking the medication or the placebo.
